Pragati Sewing Centre
(formally the Amar Jyoti Sewing Centre)
The BDA is very happy to celebrate the restarting of the former Amar Jyoti Sewing Project now operating as ‘Pragati Sewing Center’ (Pragati in Hindi means progress), with leadership and support from the Dwyer Foundation. Priye (Princy) Ranjan Dwyer is chair of the Dwyer Foundation and is also the secretary of Prajna Vihar School Interreligious Society (PVSIS).
The Pragati Sewing Center operates from a remote village called Katorwa, Bodhgaya with the project’s mission being to equip rural women and girls with vocational skills to support themselves and their families for a better living. The women will be able to purchase or loan sewing machines through the center to enable them to start their own small business in their respective villages. They will also be able to procure contracts from shops in the cities for stitching ready-made garments. The programme aims to foster among them a sense of ownership, empowerment and future development. It is the intention of the organisers to monitor the ongoing progress and success of the project by continuing to monitor its participants. This will be done both in the form of personal visits as well as a WhatsApp Group that every participant will be invited to join at commencement of their course. This group will enable the women to keep in contact with one another for peer support as well as business collaboration. There will also be an opportunity for them to start a micro-credit system for effective working.
